OBESITY PREVENTION AND INTERVENTION PROGRAM

Program Explanation

The purpose of Inner County Outreach’s Obesity Prevention and Intervention Program (OPI) is to combat obesity and the effect of obesity on the minority and economically disadvantaged populations of Harford County, Maryland.

The program is comprised of

1) physical activity training

2) nutrition training

3) food preparation training

By adopting better practices these populations will help eradicate obesity among their families. This program is composed of the following principal activities and events:

  • Healthy Eating Cooking Classes

  • Community Work-Out Days (Senior Adult, Adult, Kids on the Go)

  • Community Gardening Project

  • Youth Centered Healthy Cooking Classes.

The Problem We Are Trying To Solve:

According to CHAP (Community Health Assessment Project) 2 of 3 adults and 1 of 4 children in Harford County can be classified as overweight or obese. Obesity is a serious yet correctable problem in our community. The top three causes of death in Harford County are heart disease, cancer and stroke. Each one of these causes of death is affected by unhealthy body weight. Harford County is considered a fairly average county; ranking 10th for overall healthiness in recent studies however, Harford County still has an obesity rate higher than the state average.
